With Virat Kohli’s exit as the captain of the Indian team in the T20 format, Rohit Sharma has been named as the new captain. The All India Senior Selection Committee headed by Chetan Sharma named the new captain on Tuesday.

Many former cricketers have welcomed the decision. Saba Karim believes Rohit Sharma can take Indian cricket forward. Speaking on Khelneeti’s YouTube channel recently, Saba said:

“I don’t think selecting Rohit Sharma as captain will take Indian cricket backwards. It has to be known what the motive behind choosing someone as captain is. If India think they can win the next two World Cups with Rohit as captain, they should go ahead with it.”

Alongside Virat Kohli, the ongoing T20 World Cup was the final assignment of Ravi Shastri and Co. as well. And, Rahul Dravid has replaced him as Team India head coach whose tenure will begin with the next series against New Zealand.

Saba Karim also believes that alongside Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul too could fill the shoe after Virat Kohli. While Rohit Sharma has successfully led the Mumbai Indians team in five titles in the Indian Premier League, Rahul has also showcased his leadership talent in the league while leading the Punjab Kings as well. Saba Karim said:

“I think the choice should be very simple. Right now, you have two contenders, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. The BCCI should think about how these players would perform as batsmen after being named captain. KL Rahul has been doing well as captain and batsman for Punjab. Rohit Sharma has also been doing the same for several years now with Mumbai Indians.”

Team India has failed to qualify for the semi-final in the ongoing marquee event. They have started with two consecutive defeats against Pakistan and New Zealand. But, they fought back and won the last three matches as well but that was not enough for them to qualify for the next. The next edition of the tournament is slated to take place in Australia next year and India is expected to do well.
