Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar is arguably the greatest batsman of the ear. He almost owns every batting record in the planet. Despite his rich success with the bat, Tendulkar struggled while coming to leading the Indian Cricket Team. Recently, former India selector Chandu Borde admitted that Tendulkar never wanted captaincy and wanted to focus on his batting.
He had two stints as the captain of the national team but he failed on both occasions. Following his final stint in 1999, Tendulkar represented his country for more than a decade, but never took the leadership duties again.
Sachin Tendulkar wanted to focus on batting – Chandu Borde
Speaking on his leadership stints, Chandu Borde recalled insisting Sachin Tendulkar to lead the side. The former cricketer revealed that they were looking for a selector and had asked the master blaster to lead the team for some time. However, Tendulkar seemed determined to step down and focus on his batting which witnessed a sharp fall. Later on, the selection panel settled down for Sourav Ganguly.
“See, if you remember, Sachin, we had sent him as a captain to Australia, and he led the side there, but when he came back, he didn’t want to continue. He said, ‘No, I want to concentrate on my batting.’ Therefore, I tried to convince him to lead the side for a long time because we were on the lookout for a new captain, a new generation,” Sportskeeda quoted Borde as saying.
“But he said, ‘I want to concentrate on my batting because I could not get the performance that I wanted to put in for the team.’ And this is what happened. So, in fact, some of my colleagues were annoyed with me. They said, ‘Why you are insisting him to continue all the time!’ I said we are looking forward to the future, but then, in the end, we had selected Ganguly,” he added.
Sachin Tendulkar led India in 25 Test matches. The Asian giants managed to win only four games while lost nine and managed to salvage a draw on 12 occasions. He had a long stint as the ODI captain but India only managed to win 23 out of 73 matches under him.
