Young Australian opener Sam Konstas recently reflected on his exclusion from the playing XI during the Test series against Sri Lanka. Despite earning a place in the squad after an impressive debut against India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, the 19-year-old did not feature in the matches. Instead, the in-form Travis Head was promoted to open alongside Usman Khawaja. Konstas was later sent back home to participate in the Sheffield Shield, where he would represent New South Wales against Queensland.
Konstas expressed no disappointment over missing out on a playing opportunity. Instead, he viewed his time in the squad as a valuable learning experience. “I felt very privileged to be part of the squad and to learn from legends like Steve Smith, Travis Head, and Usman Khawaja. Understanding their methods in different conditions has been a great learning curve,” he told CODE Sports. He also acknowledged Head’s remarkable form, calling him a “legend of the game” and fully understanding why he was chosen as an opener.
Impressive Debut Against India
Konstas made headlines during his debut in the fourth Test against India in Melbourne. The young batter played a fearless knock of 60 runs off 65 balls, taking on India’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah with aggressive strokes, including an audacious reverse scoop for boundaries. His on-field presence was further highlighted when he had a heated moment with Virat Kohli, who shoulder-charged him during the match.
Throughout the Border-Gavaskar series, Konstas showed his attacking mindset, finishing with 113 runs from two matches (four innings) at an average of 28.25 and a striking rate of 81.88. His ability to take on top-class bowlers indicated his potential to be a future mainstay in Australia’s batting lineup.
Looking Ahead to Future Opportunities
While missing out on the Sri Lanka series was a setback, Konstas remains focused on the future. He emphasized that his stint with the Test squad was a valuable experience, and he hopes to make the most of any future opportunities. “If I get another chance with the Test team, I will grab it with both hands,” he said.
For now, he will continue to hone his skills in domestic cricket, aiming to prove himself worthy of a spot in Australia’s Test squad in the near future.
