The Boxing Day Test at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) has always been a stage where cricket legends are born. In 2024, a new chapter was written as 19-year-old Sam Konstas made his debut against a fierce Indian bowling lineup. Scoring a confident 60 off 56 balls, Konstas showcased not only his skill but also his temperament under pressure.

The Record-Breaking Morning Session

Every year, December 26th marks the beginning of the Boxing Day Test, a tradition cherished by cricket enthusiasts worldwide. The MCG transforms into a colosseum of cricketing excellence, with fans eagerly watching every ball. From Sir Donald Bradman’s brilliance to Shane Warne’s unforgettable spin magic, the MCG has witnessed some of cricket’s most iconic moments.

Australia scored 112 runs before the lunch break, surpassing the previous record of 111 runs set in 2007, achieving this feat against a strong Indian bowling lineup featuring stalwarts like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.

Sam Konstas’ Confident Debut Innings

A right-handed batter from Sydney, Konstas has been making waves in domestic cricket with consistent performances and a fearless approach. After stellar performances in the Sheffield Shield, selectors couldn’t overlook his talent, and the Boxing Day Test became his golden ticket.

Konstas’ fearless approach was evident as he confidently played scoops, drives, and flicks against Bumrah and Siraj, reaching his half-century in just 52 balls and showing composure against aggressive Indian bowling.

Partnership with Usman Khawaja

Konstas and Khawaja built an impressive 89-run partnership that laid a strong foundation for Australia, with Khawaja playing the perfect anchor role, scoring 38 off 73 balls.

A well-pitched delivery from Ravindra Jadeja trapped Konstas LBW on the second ball of the 20th over, and though his dismissal was unfortunate, his innings had already made a mark; Labuschagne then stepped in, scoring 12 off 12 balls to maintain Australia’s attacking intent.

Sam Konstas’ debut innings during the Boxing Day Test wasn’t just about runs—it was about confidence, poise, and setting a precedent for the future. Breaking a 17-year-old record on debut is no small feat, and this young batter has already etched his name in cricket history.
