Shakib Al Hasan, one of Bangladesh’s premier all-rounders, remains barred from bowling in domestic and international cricket. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed that Shakib failed a reassessment of his bowling action conducted in Chennai, India, last month. This test followed an earlier failed evaluation at Loughborough University, United Kingdom. Shakib’s suspension was initially imposed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) during his stint in county cricket last year due to an illegal bowling action.
In its statement, the BCB highlighted that a successful reassessment is required to lift the suspension. While Shakib can no longer contribute with the ball, he remains eligible to play as a specialist batsman in all formats of the game.
Slim Prospects for Champions Trophy Selection
Shakib’s inability to bowl significantly impacts his chances of selection for the upcoming Champions Trophy. A member of the BCB selection panel, speaking anonymously to Cricbuzz, stated, “If Shakib is not bowling, his chances of making the Champions Trophy squad are slim.”
The selector explained that the team is already preparing without Shakib and former captain Tamim Iqbal, who recently retired. The panel is considering replacements for both players, and a final decision on Shakib’s inclusion hinges on the outcome of a third reassessment of his bowling action. “If Shakib cannot bowl, we may move ahead without him. However, a replacement can still be considered if the BCB believes he will clear the test before the tournament begins,” the selector added.
Opening Slot Dilemma
In addition to Shakib’s uncertain status, the selection panel faces challenges with the opening position. Litton Das, currently out of form with only six runs in five ODIs last year, remains under scrutiny. The panel is also considering Tanzid Hasan and Soumya Sarkar, though the latter is recovering from a finger injury. Other potential candidates include Parvez Hossain Emon, Saif Hassan, and Anamul Haque, who has been in consistent form domestically.
“We are deliberating on whether to introduce a fresh face for the Champions Trophy,” the selector noted. Among the prospects, Emon appears to have a slight edge over Saif Hassan. The final decision on the squad composition will be made in an upcoming meeting.
Shakib’s prolonged bowling suspension and its implications add to the selection headaches as Bangladesh looks to build a competitive team for the prestigious tournament.
