Shardul Thakur Appointed As Mumbai’s New Ranji Trophy Captain

Shardul Thakur has officially been named the captain of Mumbai for the upcoming Ranji Trophy season, which begins on October 15. His promotion to the leadership role was widely expected, especially after Ajinkya Rahane made the decision to step down from captaincy following his two-season stint.

The move was confirmed by the senior selection committee under the chairmanship of Sanjay Patil, during their meeting to finalise the probables for the tournament. Thakur, who has already tasted success in domestic cricket as a three-time Ranji Trophy champion, will now be entrusted with leading the Mumbai squad in pursuit of further glory.

Earlier this month, he also captained the West Zone team in the Duleep Trophy semifinal, where they faced defeat. Despite the loss, Thakur’s leadership qualities have been acknowledged, and he will now look forward to taking Mumbai to another Ranji title with support from Ajinkya Rahane, who will continue to play the role of senior guide within the side.

Key Players and Injury Updates

The team management is hopeful of having all important players ready for the season-opener. Among them is Sarfaraz Khan, who had sustained a quadriceps injury during the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament in Chennai last month. His recovery is progressing well, and he is expected to be available when Mumbai faces Jammu & Kashmir in their first game.

Sarfaraz’s return will strengthen the batting line-up, giving Thakur’s side a balanced mix of experience and youth. With several youngsters also in the mix, Mumbai will be aiming to strike the right balance between fresh talent and senior experience. Thakur’s presence as an all-rounder leader is also seen as a positive, given his ability to contribute with both bat and ball.

Selection Committee’s Approach for the Season

While preparing the probables’ list for the season, the selection committee focused on ensuring that the majority of chosen players would be available throughout the campaign. This strategic approach is meant to provide consistency and stability to the team as it navigates the demanding Ranji schedule.

In its official statement, the Mumbai Cricket Association made the stance clear, “Players on national duty will be included as per their availability,” read the release signed by MCA secretary Abhay Hadap and joint secretary Deepak Patil. With this policy, the committee aims to avoid disruptions in team composition. As the season begins, all eyes will be on Thakur’s leadership, Rahane’s mentorship, and Mumbai’s attempt to reclaim their dominance in the domestic arena.
