Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have strengthened their squad by signing Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur ahead of their opening IPL 2025 match against Delhi Capitals. The team made the move after their left-arm pacer, Mohsin Khan, was ruled out due to injury. Mohsin suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in his right knee during the Vijay Hazare Trophy in December.
While he attended LSG’s pre-season camp, medical assessments led to his withdrawal from the tournament. Thakur was brought in as a replacement from the Registered Available Player Pool (RAPP) at his reserve price of INR 2 crore. Having played 95 IPL matches across five franchises, his experience will be valuable for LSG’s campaign.
Thakur’s Recent IPL Struggles
Despite his strong reputation, Thakur had a disappointing IPL 2024 season with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), where he managed only a handful of wickets in nine games and contributed minimally with the bat. CSK released him ahead of the mega auction in November. Surprisingly, he went unsold in both rounds of the auction, receiving no bids from any franchise, including CSK. However, his extensive IPL experience and all-round abilities made him an ideal replacement for Mohsin Khan in LSG’s squad.

County Cricket Plans Put on Hold
Before receiving the IPL offer, Thakur had committed to playing county cricket for Essex following an impressive Ranji Trophy season. He played a crucial role in Mumbai’s title-winning campaign, scoring 505 runs and taking 35 wickets in nine matches. His performances also sparked discussions about his potential inclusion in India’s Test squad for the England tour.
However, reports suggested that Thakur had already informed Essex that he would be available only if no IPL franchise required his services. With his return to the IPL now confirmed, his county stint remains uncertain.
Thakur’s addition to LSG brings a blend of experience and all-round capability, making him a key asset as the team prepares to take on Delhi Capitals in their season opener.
