India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav opened up about his wife’s guidance during a lean phase with the bat. Returning to form with a scintillating 82* in the second T20I against New Zealand in Raipur on Friday, the 35-year-old revealed that Devisha Shetty had been urging him to take his time.
Suryakumar hadn’t scored a T20I half-century since October 2024 and went the entire 2025 without reaching the milestone. But in the second match against New Zealand, he ended that drought with a 23-ball fifty, finishing unbeaten on 82 off 37 balls, helping India chase 209 in just 15.2 overs.
When Ishan Kishan asked if the lack of runs had weighed on his mind, Suryakumar said he followed his wife’s advice to spend time at the crease, trusting that runs would come naturally. He emphasized that performing in matches is what truly matters, regardless of form in the nets. In a video shared on BCCI.tv, he stated:
“We all have a coach at home, the one you are married to. She keeps asking me to take some time. She has seen it all and can read my mind. So, I took her advice and played carefully. I took time in the last game and even in today’s game. I felt better. I’ve been telling everyone that I was doing well in the nets.”
“But until you score in the matches you don’t feel that confidence. I utilized the 2-3 days break properly, even went home. I completely cut off social media. I practised well in the last 2-3 weeks, which brought me into a good space. Remaining happy is very important.”

Suryakumar said he felt proud of the Men in Blue for securing a comfortable win even without a contribution from Abhishek Sharma, adding:
“Cricket is sometimes called a great leveller. It’s important to have humility. I also wanted to put an end to the perception that India wins only when Abhishek scores runs. Ishan can win us matches too. However, Abhishek Sharma is one of my favourite batters.”
“I want him to score in every match. It’s a team game. You win when all eleven players contribute. We’ll keep contributing and keep giving you reasons to stay entertained.”
