Shreyas Iyer Joins Team India’s Optional Practice Before The Super 4 Match Against Bangladesh

Shreyas Iyer joined Team India’s voluntary practice session in preparation for their Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 match against Bangladesh. The Men in Blue are scheduled to play their final Super 4 game against Bangladesh at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Friday, September 15th.

Shreyas recently made a return to the Indian team during the ongoing Asia Cup after recovering from a back injury. He participated in the group stage match against Pakistan in Pallekele but was dismissed after scoring 14 runs. In the game against Nepal, the 28-year-old was part of the team but didn’t get the chance to bat.

However, Shreyas Iyer was substituted by another returning player, KL Rahul, in India’s initial Super 4 encounter against Pakistan. Confirming Shreyas’s absence due to back spasms, captain Rohit Sharma announced it at the toss. Consequently, Shreyas also missed the Super 4 fixture against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Tuesday.

As per a Times of India report, Shreyas engaged in a gentle batting session during the team’s voluntary practice. Previously, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had provided an update about the batsman before the Super 4 match against Sri Lanka through a social media post.

“Shreyas Iyer is feeling better but is yet to fully recover from back spasm. He has been adviced rest by the BCCI Medical Team and has not travelled with the team to the stadium today for India’s Super 4 match against Sri Lanka.”

In Shreyas Iyer’s absence, KL Rahul shone, scoring an unbeaten 111 off 106 balls against Pakistan and forming a partnership of 233 runs with Virat Kohli (122 not out off 94 balls).

During Team India’s second Super 4 match against Sri Lanka, Rahul played an essential role by scoring 39 runs from 44 balls on a challenging turning track at the Premadasa Stadium. This valuable contribution helped the Men in Blue secure a 41-run victory in the low-scoring game, securing their spot in the Asia Cup 2023 final.

Shreyas Iyer’s fitness is a concern for India ahead of the 2023 World Cup

Shreyas is a member of Team India’s 15-player roster for the ICC World Cup 2023, set to take place in India from October 15 to November 19. Nevertheless, his recurring back injuries pose a significant concern for the team.

All participating teams in the World Cup must confirm their 15-player squads by September 28. Any changes made after this date will necessitate approval from the ICC.
