Before the Cricket World Cup 2023, the explosive Indian opener Shubman Gill is just 10 points away from Babar Azam to become number 1 ranked One-day international in the rankings.
Shubman Gill needed to score 200 plus runs in the recent ODI series against Australia that finished on 27th September 2023. Gill showed his class with some brilliant performances in the first two One-day international matches in Mohali and Indore.
Chasing down 277 runs to win at Mohali, Shubman Gill looked in sublime touch putting pressure on the Australian bowling with a brilliant 77 off 64 deliveries with 6 fours and 2 sixes that helped India lay a strong foundation for a comfortable victory. He struggled initially in the second One-day international before launching an assault with a superb 200-run partnership for the 2nd wicket with Shreyas Iyer that helped Team India lay a strong foundation for a massive total of 399.
Gill was dismissed for 104 off 97 deliveries with 6 fours and 4 sixes keeping the momentum going for India. He sat out from the third One-day international at Rajkot which led him from missing the top spot going past Babar Azam.
Before this series, Gill was 43 points away from becoming the number 1 ranked One-day international batter. The dashing opener has moved to 847 points and is just 10 points behind Babar Azam to become the number 1 ranked One-day international batter.
Shubman Gill scored 178 runs from 2 matches and was named the player of the series award. Going into the World Cup, Babar Azam will enter as number 1 ranked ODI batter.
The fight for the number 1 ranked ODI batter will start between Shubman Gill and Babar Azam. India will start their tournament against Australia on 8th October at Chennai hoping to prove his worth on the world stage while Babar Azam will begin their journey against the Netherlands on 6th October at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.
