The former Indian captain and chief selector, Kris Srikkanth, has blasted Shubman Gill for his poor performance in the just-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Gill succeeded in scoring only 93 runs out of the lineup as a No. 3 batsman in three matches, hence a non-performer.

Srikkanth was also frustrated with Gill and said that the young batter should improve his skills in terms of technique and performance. Gill, who debuted in Test last year, has minerals of ability but his current form is problematic.

Srikkanth has warned Gill on this one and the latter now has to shape up his act to regain his place in the Indian Test squad. Given the stiff competition to make it to the team in the first place, Gill will have no option but to rise to the occasion demanded by fans and critics.

“Shubman Gill is getting such a long rope”- Kris Srikkanth

Shubman Gill has been criticized by former India captain and top selector Kris Srikkanth for his subpar play outside of Asia, calling the Indian No. 3 batsman a “highly overrated cricketer.”

“I’ve always maintained that Shubman Gill is an overrated cricketer, but nobody listened to me. He is a highly overrated cricketer,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

“When Gill is getting such a long rope, some people might wonder why even players like Suryakumar Yadav couldn’t have been given a longer run in Tests, Suryakumar didn’t have the best start in Tests, but he has the technique and ability. Yet, the selectors and management have boxed him into being a white-ball specialist. So now, fresh talent needs to be looked at.” the former India captain remarked.

“Ruturaj Gaikwad, for instance, has been performing brilliantly in first-class cricket, but he hasn’t been picked. Similarly, Sai Sudharsan has been outstanding on ‘A’ tours. These are the players who should be promoted. Instead, the selectors are stuck in a loop with Gill,” Srikkanth added.

Shubman Gill scored 31, 28, 1, 20, and 13 in 5 innings on the tour of Australia.
