Shubman Gill is gearing up for the upcoming IPL season where he will be representing the Kolkata Knight Riders. The capable batsman enhanced his reputation in the Test series against Australia where he showcased his wide array of strokes. Nevertheless, Gill still hasn’t got the opportunity to play for India in the shortest format as his strike rate is below 130. Ahead of IPL 2021, Gill has been given a statement that will surprise many as he holds the strike rate is overrated in T20 cricket.

The 21-year-old believes that a batsman should be able to adapt according to the match situation and bat at the required tempo. He added that it is all about adapting and a batsman should be able to bat in all gears. So far Shubman Gill has played 41 IPL matches in his career and has scored 939 but his strike rate is only 125. As he bats, in the top order, many suppose Gill should score runs quicker which will allow KKR to score 15-20 runs more. However, Gill is not worried about his strike rate and is keen to play according to the match situation and adapt quickly as a batsman.

It’s all about how you adapt as a batsman- Shubman Gill

“I think strike-rate is kind of overrated. It’s all about how you adapt to a certain situation. If the team demands you to play with a strike rate of 200 you should be able to do it. If the team demands you to play at a strike rate of 100, you should be able to do it. It’s just about adapting to the match situation. There shouldn’t be a certain pattern to your game where you are only able to play one kind of game and not being able to adapt to different situations,” said Gill as quoted by India Today.

Meanwhile, Gill is not the first Indian batsman who thinks strike-rate is overrated in T20 cricket. Last year during the IPL, KL Rahul also mentioned the same when questions were raised on his below-par strike rate. Gill is likely to open for KKR in IPL 2021 and will ample opportunities to improve on his career strike rate. KKR will kick off their IPL 2021 on April 11 against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
