Shubman Gill’s Fitness Concerns Ahead Of Adelaide Test

Shubman Gill is in a race against time to recover for the India vs Australia day-night Test in Adelaide, starting December 6. According to reports, the Indian team may have to proceed without their regular No. 3 batter. Gill, who missed the first Test in Perth due to a fractured left thumb, is reportedly certain to miss the upcoming pink-ball practice game in Canberra and is doubtful for the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The 24-year-old sustained the injury while fielding in an intra-squad match ahead of the series. Medical advice prescribed a 10–14 day rest period, and while his recovery progresses, he may require additional time to regain match fitness. A source revealed, “Even after the injury heals, Gill will need quality practice before returning to the Test arena.” Former selector Jatin Paranjape suggested Gill could miss two to three matches, as thumb injuries typically take weeks to heal.

India’s No. 3 Dilemma in Gill’s Absence

Gill’s absence leaves India exploring options for the critical No. 3 spot. In Perth, KL Rahul opened alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, forming a record-breaking partnership in the second innings. With regular captain Rohit Sharma back for the second Test, he is expected to resume his opening duties alongside Jaiswal, pushing Rahul down to No. 3. This adjustment may leave no room for Devdutt Padikkal, who was added to the squad for the series opener.

Gill’s role at No. 3 has been pivotal since the team moved beyond Cheteshwar Pujara. He requested a shift to the position during Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach, which led to improved performance. At No. 3, Gill has scored 924 runs in 25 innings, averaging 42.07, compared to his overall Test average of 36.73.

India Aims to Extend Winning Momentum

India’s convincing 295-run victory in the first Test has boosted confidence. The team aims to become the first to defeat Australia in a day-night Test. Despite Gill’s absence, the squad remains optimistic about delivering another standout performance in Adelaide. With the return of Rohit Sharma and the potential adaptability of the batting order, India seeks to solidify their position in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Gill’s recovery remains critical for India’s long-term campaign, as he has grown into an all-format batter since debuting in Australia four years ago. His invaluable contributions, including a match-winning performance at the Gabba in 2021, underline his importance to the team’s Test setup.
