India Test captain Shubman Gill experienced another batting failure when he got out for a two-ball duck during the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra. The 26-year-old Punjab captain got out for a low score when left-arm spinner Parth Bhut bowled his second ball to him, and the umpire declared him out lbw. The moment of dismissal became vital because Punjab experienced problems with its batting performance.
Punjab gained control of the match when they dismissed Saurashtra for 172 runs during Saurashtra’s first innings. The Punjab batting response showed its weaknesses through Gill’s early dismissal.
Punjab’s situation deteriorated significantly after Gill’s departure. The team entered a dangerous situation when they reached 87 runs with five wickets lost after 25 overs during their batting chase.
Both teams need this match because it determines their playoff positions. Saurashtra has earned 13 points through one victory and four draws, while Punjab has gained 11 points from one win, three draws, and one loss. This marks Gill’s first Ranji appearance for Punjab this season.
Shubman Gill’s Form Decline Since England Tour
Shubman Gill’s batting performance has experienced a severe decline following his exceptional display during the England series last year. The right-handed batsman scored 754 runs through five matches with an average above 75 which included four hundred runs. His performance has failed to meet expectations because he achieved an average of 33.25 across his 24 international matches that included all three formats.
Gill’s T20I record has been particularly concerning. His performance in 15 matches showed that he achieved a batting average of 24.25 while maintaining a batting performance rate below 138 which led to his unexpected removal from India’s T20 World Cup team. He has faced major challenges in ODIs because he has scored below 30 runs in six matches, although this format should be his strongest.
India’s recent bilateral series results compound concerns about Gill’s captaincy. The team suffered defeats in both series against Australia and New Zealand during his first two ODI assignments as captain.
Gill’s recent domestic performance shows that he will not achieve success. He scored only 11 runs in a List-A match for Punjab during the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy against Goa which shows he still struggles to recover his playing ability.
