On Day 2 of the one-off Test match between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan at the SSC ground, the seasoned all-rounder Angelo Mathews concluded the day with a spectacular yet unfortunate turn of events. Mathews, a pivotal figure in Sri Lanka’s dominant position, crafted a splendid innings, amassing 141 runs from 259 deliveries.
His contribution played a crucial role in guiding Sri Lanka to a commanding total of 410/6, establishing a significant lead of 212 runs over Afghanistan’s first-innings score of 198. Entering the crease after the dismissal of Kusal Mendis, Mathews initially stabilized the innings alongside Dimuth Karunaratne. Later, he showcased his experience and skill by forming a formidable 200-plus run partnership with Dinesh Chandimal.
Both batsmen achieved centuries, marking a vital recovery for the hosts after a shaky start to the day. Mathews’s century, his 16th in Test cricket and seventh at home was a masterful display, featuring eight boundaries and two sixes.

However, the highlight of the day was the unconventional end to Mathews’s innings. Facing Qais Ahmed, he attempted to pull a wayward short delivery down the leg side. Despite connecting well and sending the ball through backward square leg, Mathews lost control of his bat swing, ultimately striking the stumps with his bat.
This hit-wicket dismissal concluded his remarkable innings and marked the day’s final action. Beyond its impact on the match, Mathews’s innings propelled him past the 7,500-run mark in Test cricket. With 16 centuries and 40 fifties, he stands as the third-highest run-scorer for Sri Lanka in Test cricket, trailing only behind the legendary Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene.
Additionally, Mathews’s knock helped him reach 4,000 Test runs at home, placing him in the esteemed company of Jayawardene, Sangakkara, and Sanath Jayasuriya as the fourth Sri Lankan batter to achieve this milestone.
