The newly appointed Sri Lankan test captain Dhananjaya de Silva scored a century in the 2nd innings of the 1st Test match against Bangladesh played at Sylhet International Stadium, Sylhet on 24th March 2024.
Dhananjaya came to the crease after the fall of nightwatchman Vishwa Fernando. The captain showed great intent to keep the scoreboard ticking along with Kamindu Mendis. He made the batting look easy and completed his fifty of 82 deliveries. Sri Lanka went into the lunch break in a commanding 233 for 6.
After the lunch break, Dhananjaya looked at ease and kept the scoreboard ticking. He played the pacers and spinners brilliantly to make life tough for Bangladesh bowlers. Dhananjaya reached the milestone of 164 deliveries ensuring that Sri Lanka put things beyond Bangladesh’s reach.
Dhananjaya was eventually dismissed for 108 off 179 deliveries with 9 fours and 2 sixes. He and Mendis added 173 runs for the 7th wicket. It was a superb knock by the stylish right-handed batter ensuring that Sri Lanka set Bangladesh a record target in the 4th innings.
Dhananjaya led from the front in the first innings also. He came to the crease with Sri Lanka struggling at 57 for 5. After the lunch break, Dhananjaya played with an attacking approach with counter-attacking shots to make life tough for the Bangladesh bowlers.
He completed his fifty off 52 deliveries and put Bangladesh bowlers under pressure. He and Kamindu kept the pressure with attacking shots not allowing them to settle. Dhananjaya scored a century off 127 deliveries to lead Lanka’s recovery. Dhananjaya and Mendis added 202 runs for the 6th wicket helping Sri Lanka post 280 in the first innings.
Kumar Sangakkara last Lankan batter to score centuries in both innings
The legendary Sri Lankan batter, Kumar Sangakkara became the last Sri Lankan batter in Test matches to score centuries in both innings. He achieved this milestone against Bangladesh at Zahur Chaudhary Stadium, Chattogram on 4th February 2014.
Kumar Sangakkara made 319 runs in the first innings helping Sri Lanka post 587 runs in the first innings. He came up with another superb knock of 105 in the 2nd innings. The match ended in a tame draw. For his superb knocks, Sangakkara was named Player of the Match award.
