Smriti Mandhana Creates History, Becomes First Indian Woman to Cross 4,000 T20I Runs

Smriti Mandhana etched her name into the history books by becoming the first Indian woman cricketer to cross the 4,000-run mark in T20 internationals. In the global context, she is only the second woman to achieve this milestone, joining New Zealand great Suzie Bates.

Bates remains the only other player in women’s cricket to reach the landmark, with 4,716 runs in the shortest format. Mandhana’s achievement stands out not just for the number itself, but for the manner in which it was reached, underlining her status as one of the most influential batters of the modern era.

Speed, Consistency And An Aggressive Legacy

What elevates Mandhana’s record to an even higher level is the pace at which she accumulated her runs. She reached 4,000 T20I runs in just 3,227 balls, significantly quicker than Suzie Bates, who required 3,675 deliveries to get to the same mark. This gap highlights Mandhana’s attacking intent and consistency over the years.

Her ability to score freely at the top of the order while maintaining reliability has made her a cornerstone of India’s T20 setup. The milestone further reflects how Mandhana has evolved into a batter who combines elegance with impact, setting the tone for India in pressure situations across continents.

Milestone Match And India’s All-Round Display

Smriti Mandhana reached the historic mark during India’s match against Sri Lanka Women, scoring 25 runs off 25 balls while chasing a modest target of 122. Although her innings ended in the ninth over, it was sufficient to take her past the landmark.

This appearance was also her first international outing since India’s memorable triumph in the ODI World Cup final last month, where they defeated South Africa Women to claim their maiden title. Earlier in the match, India’s bowlers produced a disciplined effort to restrict Sri Lanka to 121 for six.

Opener Vishmi Gunaratne top-scored with 39, while Hasini Perera and Harshitha Samarawickrama added useful contributions. Captain Chamari Athapaththu was dismissed early by young pacer Kranti Gaud.

Despite the dew making conditions challenging, India controlled the middle overs through economical spells from Deepti Sharma and an impressive debut performance by Vaishnavi Sharma, rounding off a comprehensive team display on a landmark night for Mandhana.
