Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly made it clear this past weekend that Rohit Sharma was significant in their retaining the undefeated record of the Indian team at the T20 World Cup, and he attributed it mostly to him. He stated that the team should engage South Africa during the final match of the tournament to stop being trophy-less for the past 11 years.

Since 2013, when they triumphed in the Champions Trophy, India hasn’t tasted any global glory yet. That will change in the championship match that takes place in Barbados. It will happen between India and the Proteas.

“I’m very happy for Rohit Sharma. Life comes full circle. Six months ago he was not even the captain of Mumbai Indians and the same man is now leading India to a World Cup final, unbeaten,” Ganguly said here after being roped in as the brand ambassador of Veedol.

“He has played two World Cup finals where he has gone into the final unbeaten. That speaks of his captaincy and leadership quality and I’m not surprised because he became captain when I was the BCCI president and when Virat didn’t want to captain India anymore,” Sourav Ganguly said.

“It took a lot of time to make him captain because he was not ready to be captain. It took a lot of pushing from all of us to make him captain and I’m very happy to see the progress of Indian cricket under him.” Ganguly added.

“Virat should continue to open”- Sourav Ganguly

During the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024, former India captain Sourav Ganguly shared his views on the batting struggles of being promoted to an opening position in the T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli succeeded in the IPL, scoring 741 runs but has failed to deliver as expected for now, and he doesn’t have any justification for his choice of being given such a ticket.

“Virat should continue to open. He just had a World Cup of 700 runs seven months ago. He is human. Sometimes, he will also fail, and you have to accept it” Sourav Ganguly said.

“People like Kohli, (Sachin) Tendulkar, (Rahul) Dravid, they are institutions for Indian cricket. Three-four matches don’t make them weaker players. Don’t rule him out in the final tomorrow,” said Sourav Ganguly after being roped in as the brand ambassador of Veedol, as quoted by PTI.

India advanced to the finals of the 2014 T20 World Cup, the 2023 50-over World Cup, and the WTC final following their Champions Trophy title, but they were all unsuccessful.
