Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka has been arrested in Sydney on Sunday, November 6, on charges of rape. The cricketer was initially part of the main squad, however, was later ruled out due to a hamstring injury.
Gunathilaka was arrested by Sydney Police at the Sussex Street hotel at about 1.00 am on Sunday on charges of sexually harassing a woman. He was staying with the team after getting ruled out of the tournament during the first round owing to a hamstring injury.
As per reports, Danushka Gunathilaka had begun interacting with the 29-year-old woman on an online dating app and the duo decided to meet up. But detectives from the State Crime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad and Eastern Suburbs reportedly investigated the issue and found out that the woman was allegedly raped at a home in Rose Bay.
“The woman met with the man after communicating with him for a number of days via an online dating application; it is alleged he then sexually assaulted her on the evening of Wednesday 2 November 2022,” a New South Wales police statement said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Danushka Gunathilaka has been taken to custody on charges of four counts of rape. He was also denied a bail before appearing on the court.
“He was taken to Sydney City Police Station and charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent. The Sri Lankan national was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court via AVL today,” the report added.
Danushka Gunathilaka has had some disciplinary issues in the past as well. He was banned from international cricket for a year in July 2021 along with other players like Kusal Mendis and Niroshan Dickwella for breaching bio-bubble rules in England.
