Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler, England‘s limited-overs captain, will not participate in the next season of The Hundred due to a muscle strain. A detail that is widely anticipated but not yet confirmed, he should therefore expect a six-week recovery period according to the Telegraph. Buttler was scheduled to captain the Manchester Originals in the tournament but cannot do it because of an injury he got while training.

In the upcoming months, England will be hosting a white-ball series against Australia, and the wicketkeeper-batter is racing against time to be able to participate. Buttler finding out his fate as captain will happen within a short time. England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) managing director Rob Key is expected to hold discussions with him and head coach Matthew Mott.

Recently, the England cricket team performed poorly during a few key competitions such as the 2023 ODI World Cup where they finished 6th and the 2024 T20 World Cup where they became semi-finalists. Although they qualified for the semi-finals, Buttler and his team had a disappointing tournament. They lost to their arch-rivals from Australia, just about managed to get through the group stage, and also suffered defeats to South Africa and India at the climax of their campaign.

Initial reports from colleagues as well as those in charge do not reflect well on Buttler. Some people think he might resign soon. Except for winning the 2022 T20 World Cup, Buttler has struggled so far in his captaincy role. He is to reduce his national team responsibilities for a while at least owing to the birth of his third baby which has come with 33 runs as well as increasing his family members to five including himself.

Phil Salt will captain the Manchester Originals in the absence of Jos Buttler

If all goes well, there might just be a new captaincy contender for England down the line, someone like Phil Salt who has never led at the highest level before. Phil Salt, who is an opener and expected to start all games involving fifty overs or less format, looks set to captain Manchester Originals unless Jos Buttler decides otherwise.

Manchester Originals will start their campaign against Welsh Fire on Thursday, July 25th in the fourth edition of The Hundred which is set to kick off from Tuesday, July 23rd.
