KL Rahul is expected to make a comeback for India during the Asia Cup in 2023, as his recovery from a significant thigh injury seems to have progressed well.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is pleased with his recuperation and is confident about his availability for the Men in Blue in the tournament.
During the IPL 2023 match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rahul suffered a serious thigh injury, which also caused him to miss the World Test Championship (WTC) final. At that time, doubts were raised whether he would be fit in time for the Asia Cup.
KL Rahul’s return will be a great boost for the Indian team as he has been consistently performing well for them in ODIs and his presence in the middle order adds balance to the squad due to his wicketkeeping abilities.
KL Rahul’s return is likely, but Shreyas Iyer’s comeback remains uncertain
A source from the Times of India mentioned that both KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have been essential components of India’s middle order in ODIs.
However, there are concerns about Iyer’s participation in the Asia Cup and even the World Cup, as he underwent surgery for a lower back injury but hasn’t shown significant progress in recovery.
“The coaches and medical experts at the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy in Bangalore are satisfied with Rahul’s progress/recovery. He will be available for selection for the Asia Cup”, source told to TOI.
In Iyer’s absence, the Indian team management experimented with various options like Sanju Samson, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel at the No. 4 position during the ODI series against the West Indies.
Nevertheless, India ideally wants both Rahul and Iyer to be fit and in top form for the upcoming World Cup. With Rahul’s return on the horizon, the team will look forward to his contribution during the Asia Cup and beyond.
