Veteran India batter Ajinkya Rahane has decided not to join the English county side Leicestershire as originally planned due to his desire for a break from cricket. The 35-year-old was initially scheduled to join the county club in June, but his arrival was delayed due to increased international commitments.

Following the IPL, Rahane travelled to England for the World Test Championship final and then embarked on India’s Test tour of the West Indies this month. Given these additional involvements that were not previously factored into his schedule, Rahane expressed his wish to take a break from cricket during August and September. Consequently, he will not be able to feature for Leicestershire as intended.

The club acknowledged and fully understood Rahane’s situation, recognizing the hectic schedule he has experienced in recent months, both in India and while travelling with the national team. They respected his decision to recover and spend time with his family during this period.

Director of Cricket Claude Henderson issued a statement on behalf of the club, expressing their support for Rahane’s decision. They have been in constant communication with him and understand how quickly situations can change in the world of cricket. Rahane remains appreciative of the club’s understanding and still hopes to play for Leicestershire in the future.

Replacing Rahane in the team is Australian cricketer Peter Handscomb. Handscomb has extended his stay with the Foxes to participate in the upcoming Metro Bank One Day Cup, bringing valuable qualities to the team, including strong leadership in addition to his batting and wicketkeeping skills.

The club had contingency plans in place for such situations, and they are delighted that Handscomb will continue to be part of the team. Leicestershire’s Director of Cricket, Claude Henderson, expressed his satisfaction with Handscomb’s continued presence, stating that his leadership qualities would be a significant asset to the team, providing support to Lewis Hill and the rest of the players in the changing room.

In summary, Ajinkya Rahane’s plans to join Leicestershire have been postponed due to his decision to take a break from cricket after a series of intense international commitments. The club has shown understanding and support for his choice, and they look forward to the possibility of him representing Leicestershire at a later date.

In the meantime, Peter Handscomb will be stepping in as a replacement and is expected to contribute positively to the team’s performance during the Metro Bank One Day Cup.
