Sunil Gavaskar recently made a strong statement regarding Abhimanyu Easwaran following his impressive performance in the Duleep Trophy. Easwaran, who captained India B in the tournament, caught the attention of the former Indian cricket legend, especially for his consistent batting.
Gavaskar emphasized that the Indian selectors should not overlook Easwaran’s remarkable form, especially considering the upcoming tour of Australia. The Australian pitches, known for their pace and bounce, demand batsmen who can handle the short ball. Gavaskar suggested that Easwaran’s solid technique and ability to play long innings make him a strong candidate for the squad.
Gavaskar said: “The two centuries scored by Abhimanyu Easwaran in the Duleep Trophy should not be overlooked as India will need batsmen who can play the short ball in Australia. It would be wise for the team to go on this tour with more opening batsmen who can bat in the middle order apart from the top order.”
Impressive Duleep Trophy Performance of Abhimanyu Easwaran
Gavaskar highlighted Easwaran’s two centuries in the Duleep Trophy, urging the selectors to recognize the value of having more openers who can also bat in the middle order. He argued that such players would be crucial for India’s success in Australia. Easwaran’s 309 runs in the tournament, with an impressive average of 77.25, placed him second among the highest run-scorers.
Notably, he played a brilliant knock of 116 against India D and earlier scored 157 against India C, which significantly boosted his profile. Due to his stellar performance, there has been growing discussion about Easwaran’s potential inclusion in the Indian squad as a backup opener. He was previously selected as a replacement during India’s tour of South Africa but did not make his debut.
As India prepares for the five-match Border-Gavaskar Test series starting on November 22, with the first match scheduled in Perth, Gavaskar’s endorsement of Easwaran adds weight to calls for his inclusion in the squad.
