Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has shared that there will be some retirements after Team India’s rather forgettable 10-wicket defeat against England in the T20 World Cup semifinal on Thursday, November 10. However, Gavaskar gave the hint that there are so many players in the team who are in their mid-30s and this might be the end of their T20 career as well.

“There will be some retirements also coming through, you never know. This is not the time to think about it. You really get away from it, give it a lot of thought but there are a lot of players in their mid-30s who would consider their position for the Indian T20 team,” Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports.

However, the veteran has also suggested that Hardik Pandya taking over the captaincy role in the New Zealand tour can be the beginning of a new era for Indian cricket as well.

“For the New Zealand tour, it’s a different team. The team is going there under Hardik Pandya. He will begin to put his stamp on the team because clearly, the selection committee has sent a signal that he, having won the IPL in his first assignment, as a captain, they have marked him out as captain for T20s,” Sunil Gavaskar concluded.

While chasing 169 to win, England reached the target with four overs in hand as openers Alex Hales (86 not out) and Jos Buttler (80 not out) helped the side to win the all-important game as well. They smashed 170 runs off 96 balls and this was the leading England opening stand in T20 cricket, and the highest opening stands in all T20 World Cups as well.

After the defeat, India captain Rohit Sharma said: “Pretty disappointed how it turned up today. We batted well at the backend to get that score. We were not upto the mark with the ball, we couldn’t turn up today. It’s all about handling the pressure in knockout games. All these guys have played enough to understand that. These guys have played under pressure in IPL games, it’s all about keeping calm.”
