In the IPL 2024 showdown between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens on a Friday, KKR made history by posting the highest total ever seen in Kolkata’s IPL history. Surpassing Chennai Super Kings‘ previous record of 235 runs, KKR achieved this milestone in the 18th over of their innings, ultimately finishing with a formidable 261/6 in their allotted 20 overs.
This remarkable score not only stands as KKR’s second-highest total in IPL history but also ranks as the highest ever against Punjab Kings. In the broader context of the IPL, KKR’s 261-run feat ranks as the sixth-highest total ever recorded.
The foundation for KKR’s monumental innings was laid by Phil Salt and Sunil Narine, who opened with a blistering partnership of 138 runs, with Salt contributing 75 runs and Narine adding 71 to the tally. Their partnership not only set a new high for KKR’s opening stands in the season but also marked the second-highest partnership in KKR’s IPL history, surpassing the legendary duo of Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa.

Following the explosive start, Andre Russell and skipper Shreyas Iyer played crucial cameos, contributing 24 and 28 runs respectively, while Venkatesh Iyer also chipped in with quick runs. The aggressive batting display was exemplified by the sheer number of boundaries and maximums, with KKR smashing a total of 24 fours and 18 sixes.
Notably, five out of KKR’s seven batters achieved a strike rate of over 200, showcasing the team’s dominance with the bat. Despite the efforts of PBKS skipper Sam Curran, who conceded 60 runs in his four-over spell, KKR’s batsmen relentlessly piled on the runs.
This historic total not only marked KKR’s dominance in the match but also established a new benchmark at Eden Gardens, surpassing CSK’s previous record set in the 2023 edition of the tournament. Overall, KKR’s performance stands as the seventh-highest team total in IPL history, solidifying their status as a force to be reckoned with in the tournament.
