The ICC unveiled the nominees for the 2024 Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year, sparking discussions about unexpected inclusions and notable omissions. India’s exceptional year in T20Is, marked by only two losses and a triumphant World Cup victory, raised expectations of multiple nominations.
However, only Arshdeep Singh made the cut from the Indian squad. Arshdeep’s stellar performance in 18 matches, where he claimed 36 wickets at an impressive average of 13.50 and an economy rate of 7.49, earned him a spot alongside Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza, Australia’s Travis Head, and Pakistan’s Babar Azam.
Controversial Omissions: Bumrah and Samson
The absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Sanju Samson left fans puzzled, especially considering their significant contributions. Bumrah, despite playing only eight matches, was pivotal in India’s World Cup campaign, delivering a game-changing spell in the final. Many felt his impact warranted a nomination. Sanju Samson also stood out with three centuries in 2024, the highest by any player in a calendar year, coupled with a strike rate of 180.
His omission, especially after such a prolific season, added to the debate. In contrast, Babar Azam’s inclusion surprised some, as his 738 runs at a strike rate of 133 were overshadowed by a subpar World Cup performance, where Pakistan failed to advance beyond the group stage.
Recognizing All-Round Excellence
Sikandar Raza’s all-round brilliance ensured his third consecutive nomination. With 573 runs and 24 wickets in 2024, Raza remained the backbone of Zimbabwe’s efforts to reclaim their position in international cricket. Meanwhile, Travis Head impressed with 539 runs at a striking rate of 178, showcasing his explosive potential.
Both players face stiff competition from Babar’s consistent run-scoring and Arshdeep’s remarkable wicket-taking ability. The announcement sets the stage for a tightly contested race, as fans eagerly anticipate who will succeed Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I Player of the Year.
