Sussex Captain Cheteshwar Pujara Suspended For The Upcoming County Championship Match

Experienced Indian Test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara won’t be available for the LV Insurance County Championship match against Derbyshire starting on September 19. Pujara, who serves as Sussex’s captain, is facing suspension due to the misconduct of his teammates Jack Carson and Tom Haines.

Coach Paul Farbrace has revealed a 13-player squad for the match against Derbyshire, and Carson and Haines have been omitted from the squad due to their misconduct during the Leicestershire game.

Following the ECB’s guidelines, both players will be absent for one match, and the captain will face a similar consequence. Nonetheless, Carson and Haines have issued apologies for their misconduct.

In addition to them, Ari Karvelas is still unavailable as an investigation into the incident during the Leicestershire game remains pending. Furthermore, right-arm seamer Ollie Robinson is sidelined due to injury.

Paul Farbrace expressed his disappointment with Jack Carson and Tom Haines, leading to Cheteshwar Pujara’s suspension

Farbrace addressed the Level one and two offenses, emphasizing their zero-tolerance policy for such behavior and expressing regret over the deduction of 12 points.

As quoted in Sussex’s website:

“We have made Jack and Tom unavailable for selection for this game at Derbyshire.”

“Following the umpires and match referee’s decision to charge both players with on field level one and level two offences, we needed to take a stance and show them we will not condone such behaviours. Ultimately it has cost us the availability of Cheteshwar and we have been deducted 12 points.”

Sussex will seek their third victory when they take on Derbyshire from September 19 onwards. Their exciting 15-run triumph against Leicestershire was particularly memorable, as Leicestershire came very close to successfully chasing down 499 runs.

Yet, left-arm seamer Jaydev Unadkat’s six-wicket performance prevented Leicestershire from achieving an astonishing victory. Colin Ackermann led the scoring with 136 runs, and Umar Amin, Ben Cox, and Tom Scriven all achieved half-centuries.

With Pujara unavailable, Tom Alsop will take on the captaincy role for Sussex against Derbyshire.
