T20 World Cup, India vs New Zealand: Here’s Why Harmanpreet Kaur Was Displeased Following The Run-Out Incident With Amelia Kerr

In a strange turn of events, Amelia Kerr was ruled not out even though she was short of her crease, as the on-field umpires had declared the ball dead during India’s match against New Zealand in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 on Friday.

Here’s what happened:

Kerr hit the ball to long-off for a single. India’s captain Harmanpreet picked up the ball and took a few steps into the circle without throwing it. From the wicketkeeper’s end, Devine noticed this and called for Kerr to take a second run.

However, during this time, the umpire had given the cap to bowler Deepti Sharma, indicating the end of the over. The second run was a poor decision by the New Zealand skipper. Harman quickly understood the situation and made a swift throw to the keeper’s end, where Richa Ghosh removed the bails in an instant, leaving Kerr well short of her crease.

Amelia Kerr was ruled not out

The New Zealand all-rounder began to walk back to the dressing room before the umpires stepped in, declaring it a dead ball, which meant a review couldn’t take place.

This led to a lively discussion between Harmanpreet Kaur and the on-field umpires, during which the Indian captain explained that she threw the ball only because the New Zealand batters attempted the run. However, her animated argument didn’t sway the officials.

India’s head coach Amol Muzumdar expressed his displeasure with the decision and was seen having an extended and animated discussion with the fourth umpire. The on-field umpires remained firm that the over had concluded, allowing Amelia Kerr to continue.

However, Kerr was dismissed in the next over, caught at cover by Vastrakar off Renuka’s bowling. This was followed by an exuberant celebration from Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who was positioned at mid-off.
