Team India’s assistant coach, Sitanshu Kotak, confirmed that Virat Kohli’s back injury is unlikely to be a major concern following India’s 17-run victory in the first ODI against South Africa. Kohli experienced discomfort towards the end of his innings and received treatment from the physios at JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi on Sunday, November 30.
Kohli spent nearly 40 overs at the crease, playing a masterful 135 off 120 balls. After hitting several boundaries during the first powerplay, he shifted focus to rotating the strike and turning singles into doubles to maintain the momentum amid a brief collapse.
Although over 60% of his runs came through boundaries, the constant running and exertion in the heat took a toll towards the end of his innings. He remained unbeaten on 134 off 116 balls at the end of the 42nd over and received short on-field treatment before continuing to bat.
By that time, fatigue had understandably taken its toll, and he fell shortly after trying a weary slog. On a positive note, Kohli was active in the field during the second innings, with Sitanshu Kotak confirming that there are no concerns regarding his injury.
“I think his back is okay, as much as I know. He is fine,” the assistant coach said during the post-match press conference (via BCCI).
“I have to focus on my recovery too”- Virat Kohli after his marathon innings vs South Africa
Virat Kohli, named player of the match for his brilliant century, highlighted that maintaining his fitness and focusing on recovery has become even more important now that he plays only one format.
“I came a few days back and I’m 37 so I also need to look after recovery. I visualize myself being intent and sharp. I’m just playing one format of the game now. If you have played so much cricket in the last 15-16 years, your reflexes are always there. You can bat long in the nets and then eventually you still have it in you,” Virat Kohli said during the post-match presentation.
