“The Ball Stayed In Play Due To The Indian Fans’ prayers”- Rishabh Pant Recalls Suryakumar Yadav’s Catch In The 2024 T20 World Cup Final

Team India‘s Rishabh Pant recently commented on Suryakumar Yadav‘s remarkable boundary catch to dismiss David Miller in the 2024 T20 World Cup final against South Africa. Pant initially believed that Miller’s shot would definitely clear the boundary.

In that moment, South Africa required 16 runs in the final over. With Miller, who is quite the explosive batsman at his peak batting form, it appeared that the Proteas were in total control of the situation. The first delivery bowled by Hardik Pandya was an outside off full toss.

Miller hit a lofted straight drive off the ground and from the very beginning it looked like he had made a perfect shot. But at long-off Suryakumar picked out an amazing catch which he kept juggling and stayed calm despite being under pressure.

As a result of this dismissal, India got back on track again and ultimately won by seven runs under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy. On Tanmay Bhat’s YouTube channel (from 6:05), here’s what Pant said about Suryakumar’s catch:

“When the ball was in the air, it felt like everything was gone. When it hit the bat, it seemed like a sure-shot six. The ball didn’t cross the boundary line because of the Indian fans’ prayers.”

Rishabh Pant made his return to international cricket at the 2024 T20 World Cup after a gap of nearly seventeen months. The young twenty-six year old was out of action due to several injuries incurred in a December 2022 car accident.

“We have to move on and focus on what’s next” – Rishabh Pant comments on India’s 2024 T20 World Cup victory

As stated in the clip, Rishabh Pant could be heard mentioning that he has always dreamed of taking home the World Cup as a member of Team India. “This is a moment I will never forget,” he repeated because it is ‘hard to believe’.

Yet, he warned against getting too carried away by the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled for 2024, and called for more focus on upcoming fixtures. He reiterated this point at some length when he added (from 5:28):

“As a cricketer, you dream of winning the World Cup. During the injury, I was thinking that I wanted to win the World Cup. To come back into the side and directly win the World Cup was an unbelievable feeling.”

“I am not thinking much about it now because I feel in India, people forget after 10-15 days what you have done. So, it is important for you to forget these things as well. That moment will always be there with me, but now we have to move on and focus on what’s next,” he added.

The left-handed batsman is expected to be seen next during India’s two-match Test series at home against Bangladesh starting September 19th. It will be his return to India’s Test squad after almost 20 months absence.
