Veteran England batter Joe Root surprised spectators by successfully pulling off a reverse scoop shot that resulted in a six during the match between London Spirit and Trent Rockets at Lord’s on Saturday, August 12th, in The Hundred tournament.
During the 64th ball of the Rockets’ pursuit, Nathan Ellis delivered a full toss to Root. Anticipating the shot, Root positioned himself adeptly and executed a reverse scoop over the wicketkeeper for a six, leaving everyone captivated.

Joe Root hammered an impressive 72 runs from only 35 deliveries with a remarkable strike rate of 205.71, featuring two sixes and 10 boundaries.
The English player replicated such shots to score boundaries in the recently concluded Ashes 2023 series, which ended in a 2-2 tie. Throughout the five Test matches, the right-handed batsman amassed 412 runs, comprising one century and two half-centuries.
London Spirit defeated Trent Rockets despite Joe Root’s 72*
However, Joe Root’s 72* was not enough as London Spirit triumphed over Trent Rockets by a narrow two-run margin in an exciting conclusion. Batting first, London Spirit set a target of 195/4 in 100 balls. Captain Dan Lawrence was the standout performer with 93 runs off 49 balls, including three sixes and 10 boundaries.
Zak Crawley, Daryl Mitchell, and Ravi Bopara also made useful contributions. Sam Cook and Ish Sodhi each took two wickets for the Rockets. In reply, the Spirits held the Rockets to a total of 193/5. Daniel Worrall and Liam Dawson secured two wickets each, while Nathan Ellis claimed one wicket.
Aside from Root, Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Daniel Sams contributed with scores of 33(23) and 32(11) respectively. Securing the victory, the Spirit notched their inaugural win in The Hundred 2023, having encountered two rain-affected matches. This win positions them fourth on the leaderboard with 4 points, while Trent Rockets stand fifth with 3 points.
Root’s upcoming match will see him facing off against Welsh Fire in Cardiff on Monday, August 14th.
