Travis Head May Miss Boxing Day Test Against India

The 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy is set for an electrifying climax as both India and Australia prepare for the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). However, Australia’s preparations have hit a roadblock with Travis Head, their most consistent batter this series, facing a quad injury.

Travis Head’s Dominance in the Series So Far

Travis Head has been Australia’s standout performer in the series, amassing over 400 runs at an average of 81.2. His aggressive batting style and ability to dominate bowlers have been instrumental in Australia’s success so far.

He first scored 140 in the pink-ball Test in Adelaide, leading the hosts to a comfortable ten-wicket victory. The left-hander then followed up with another century at the Gabba, scoring 152 runs. Earlier, he had also scored 89 runs in the second innings of the Perth Test, which Australia lost by 295 runs.

Details of Travis Head’s Injury

Head was seen limping during Australia’s second innings at the Gabba Test and subsequently missed fielding duties on Day 5. Although he downplayed the issue in the post-match presentation, his absence from Monday’s training session has raised concerns. Sydney Morning Herald report downplayed Head’s absence from Monday’s training, noting that the team spokesperson mentioned the practice session was “optional.” Losing Travis Head would be a significant blow to Australia’s middle order. His ability to counterattack under pressure and stabilize the innings has been crucial in the series.

Head’s Fitness Test and Recovery Timeline

Travis Head is set to undergo a fitness test on Tuesday, just two days before the Boxing Day Test. The Australian medical team remains optimistic but cautious about his availability.

Australia’s Backup Plans without Travis Head

Sam Konstas, a 19-year-old batting prodigy, has been making waves in domestic cricket with his consistent performances. Konstas was included in the squad after an impressive domestic season. His attacking style and composure under pressure have caught the selectors’ attention.

“I do, but I am not going to say what it is … just trying to put pressure back on the bowlers,” Konstas told reporters on Monday when asked about his plans to counter the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep.

If Head is unavailable, Sam Konstas is likely to make his debut. Additionally, Australia might rely more heavily on experienced players like Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne.

Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) Pitch Report

The MCG pitch traditionally offers assistance to fast bowlers early on, with batsmen finding it easier to score runs once the shine wears off the ball. The Boxing Day Test is one of the most iconic fixtures in cricket, drawing massive crowds and immense global attention.

Australia holds a dominant record at the MCG, but India has also had memorable victories here, including their historic win in 2018. With injuries to key players, Australia has added Jhye Richardson, Beau Webster, and Sean Abbott to their squad for the remaining two Tests against India. Australia’s last Test series win against India came way back during the 2014-15 season.
