The Indian Women’s Team started the World Cup journey by defeating arch-rivals Pakistan in the World Cup at Newlands, Cape Town on 12 February 2023. Chasing down 150 runs to win, Jemimah Rodrigues looked in decent touch right from the word go putting pressure on the Pakistan bowlers.
Shafali Verma showed intent on keeping the scoreboard ticking and making life tough. Verma and Harmanpreet Kaur fell in quick succession to leave India in trouble.
Jemimah Rodrigues showed her composure with some lovely shots putting pressure on Pakistan bowlers. Richa Ghosh was given out by the umpire but on review, it was overturned to not out as it hit the gloves. Rodrigues and Ghosh kept the scoreboard ticking not allowing the Pakistan bowlers to settle.
Rodrigues looked determined and hit the winning runs with a boundary. With this boundary, Rodrigues completed a half-century off 38 balls. Indian women’s team won the match by 7 wickets with one over to spare. Ghosh and Rodrigues added unbeaten 58 runs for the 4th wicket.
Pakistan captain Bismah Maroof won the toss and decided to bat first. It was not an ideal start as Javeria Khan, Muneeba Ali and Nida Dar went cheaply. Sidra Ameen also lost her wicket as India kept the pressure on Pakistan leaving them in big trouble at 68 for 4. Maroof and Ayesha Naseem put on an excellent display of batting hitting some lovely shots.
Maroof led from the front with well complied fifty off 45 balls. It was a superb knock as Maroof and Naseem put on unbeaten 81 runs for the 5th wicket. Pakistan women posted 149 for 4 in 20 overs.
The Indian women’s team struggled with their fielding but looked decent in patches. Radha Yadav was the pick of bowlers for India picking up 2 for 21 in 4 overs. It was a great start for the Indian women’s team to the World Cup as they play their next match on 15 February against West Indies at the same ground.
