India”s U-19 cricket team has registered a world cup win in New Zealand 2018. This is India”s 4th U-9 world cup event win in the cricket history.
Coached by Rahul Dravid and led by Mumbai young sensation Prithvi Shaw, India dominated the tournament right throughout.
On the day of the finals, India bowling first got off to a good start by having Australia 59-3, but then a partnership between Jonathan Merlo who got 79 and Param Uppal 34 threatened to take the score to about 270-280 which on the day of the final could”ve have been a steep chase before India”s bowlers came back in the game and bundled out Australia for 216.
The rescue act was led by the finger spinner Anukul Roy who is now India”s highest wicket-taker of the tournament with 14 wickets and Kamlesh Nagarkoti the right arm quick.
Chasing the modest target of 217, while the pressure of a world cup final chase was there, the Indian openers Prithvi Shaw and Manjot Kalra got India off to a very substantial start of 71 before a ball from seamer Will Sutherland sneaked through the defense of Shaw, but Manjot carried on with Shubman Gill India”s highest run-getter of the tournament for a partnership of 60 in which Shubman got 31.
Manjot Kalra though kept playing his shots putting pressure on the bowling attack along with no.4 Harvik Desai the wk keeper batsmen who himself got 47. Manjot finished the job by completing a famous hundred and a great win for India”s U19.
This will remain a memorable win in some time to come for how dominating the cricket India played and how much India”s U-19s looked far more organized than the rest of the cricketing world in the tournament. It”s a win for India”s cricket system.
Twitter though went a big buzz today after the win with appreciations coming from all corners of the world for India”s U19 head coach Rahul Dravid and his wards. People are congratulating Rahul for winning his first world cup in any form and are very happy for the wards.

For me the scene of the day is the entire bunch jumping behind Rahul Dravid while he is on air!! That’s some amount of space and freedom of expression in the young team! Kudos to Rahul for that.

Rahul Dravid cracks me up. Speaks during interview about how embarrassed he is sometimes as coach of India U-19 because too much attention is put on him because of his stature rather than the players and support staff. Class act. World cricket needs more of him.
