USA Penalized 5 Runs In Their 2024 T20 World Cup Match Against India, Here’s Why??

The 2024 T20 World Cup match between India and USA in New York was approaching a tense conclusion, with India needing 35 runs from 30 deliveries. However, just before the 16th over began, USA were docked five runs. Initially, there was confusion about the reason, which was later clarified by local broadcasters.

This penalty was incurred because it was the third instance in the innings where USA exceeded 60 seconds to start a new over, resulting in the five-run deduction. The ICC implemented this rule following its trial introduction during a board meeting late last year.

The rule states:

“The CEC agreed to introduce a stop clock on a trial basis in men’s ODI and T20I cricket from December 2023 to April 2024. The clock will be used to regulate the amount of time taken between overs.”

”If the bowling team is not ready to bowl the next over within 60 seconds of the previous over being completed, a 5-run penalty will be imposed the third time it happens in an innings.”

Unfortunately for USA, the penalty occurred at a critical juncture when they were tightening the pressure on India. This turn of events leveled the match to a run-a-ball scenario, with India needing only 30 runs from 30 deliveries. This development frustrated USA skipper Aaron Jones and their team.

India successfully navigates a challenging run chase against USA to advance to the Super 8 stage

The two undefeated teams in Group A, India and USA, captivated the New York crowd with a thrilling low-scoring match. India, after winning the toss and opting to bowl, limited the co-hosts to a below-par 110/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

However, the chase proved challenging for the Men in Blue, who lost Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the first three overs. Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant stabilized the innings with a 29-run partnership before Pant departed for 18 off 20 deliveries.

However, Suryakumar remained composed and played a superb innings, scoring an unbeaten 50 off 49 balls on a tricky wicket to guide India to a seven-wicket victory in the penultimate over. He received valuable support from Shivam Dube, who recovered from a slow start to finish unbeaten on 31 off 35 balls.

This win marked India’s third consecutive victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup campaign, making them the first team from Group A to advance to the Super 8 stage.
