The first match of the Super 12 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 started with New Zealand taking on Australia played at Sydney Cricket Ground, SCG on October 22, 2022. Glenn Phillips set the centre stage on fire with a brilliant fielding effort, leaving everyone shell-shocked.
After being invited into bat by Australian captain Aaron Finch, Finn Allen produced a stunning start putting on 56 runs in just 4.1 overs. Devon Conway looked in sensational touch remaining not out on 92 while Jimmy Neesham’s quickfire cameo helped New Zealand post 200 for 3. Conway kept the momentum going taking singles and hitting boundaries against top-quality Australian bowling.
The Australian reply did not start well losing the wickets of Warner, Finch, and Mitchell Marsh inside the first six overs. New Zealand produced a stunning piece of fielding effort as Glenn Phillips took a stunning diving catch to dismiss Marcus Stoinis leaving Australia in big trouble.
The incident took place in the ninth over as Marcus Stoinis tried to hit inside out but Glenn Phillips dived full stretch and left Australia struggling at 50 for 4. Mitchell Santer kept things tight for New Zealand not allowing the defending Champions to score runs easily. Phillips stunned the Australian crowd with a stunning catch.

New Zealand post 200/3 in 20 overs
Finn Allen blasted away Mitchell Starc for 14 runs in the first over of the World Cup. Allen put enough pressure on the Australian bowling and made life tough for Aaron Finch and company. After the fall of Allen’s wicket, Conway looked impressive taking singles and hitting occasional boundaries maintaining pressure on Australian bowling.
Glenn Phillips failed to contribute anything big. Jimmy Neesham and Conway kept the pressure on Australian bowling with attacking shots. Neesham smashed a six off the final delivery to help New Zealand post 200 for 3.
Conway remained not out on 92 off 58 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes. It was a superb batting effort by New Zealand batters.
Australia are the defending champions of the T20 World Cup, having won the elusive title last year in the UAE.
