Rashid Khan is a gem of a talent coming from Afghanistan who is making headlines in every tournament he plays. The 18-year-old is already the leading wicket taker in ODIs in 2017 with 36 scalps from 13 games. He has taken one 7-for and a 6-for in ODIs this year already.
The successful IPL stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad where he picked 17 wickets from 14 games and looked unplayable on occasions earned him a contract with Guyana Amazon Warriors in CPL. His team Guyana made it through the playoffs and were playing the eliminator against Jamaica Tallahwas in Trinidad.
Put into bat, Jamaica Tallahwas got off to a rapid start and were comfortably placed at 116/4 after 14 overs and were all set to go all guns blazing looking to get 60-70 runs in last 6 overs. Just then Rashid came on to a bowl and knocked over McCarthy with a googly. Next man was Jonathan Foo and he also departed without troubling the scorers, bamboozled by another googly. The next man in was Rovman Powell who is known for his prowess with the bat. Rashid slipped in another googly and knocked the timber thereby claiming hat trick in CPL knockout.
The best part was all 3 dismissals were bowled and Rashid bowled googly on every occasion. Batsmen just didn’t read the ball. Talking about his performance Rashid said, “I am very happy because it was the first hat-trick of my career and first in CPL history as well. I looked to bowl in right areas. It was difficult to grip the ball here. I love to bowl the googly.”
Guyana Amazon Warriors beat Jamaica Tallahwas by 5 wickets with 13 balls to spare, thanks to Luke Ronchi’s 33-ball 70. They now play Trinbago Knight Riders in Qualifier 2. Rashid ended with figures of 3/32.
