Virat Kohli might just become a better cricketer after being released from captaincy feels Gautam Gambhir. The BCCI announced Rohit Sharma as the new ODI skipper of the Indian team. The ODI series against South Africa will be his first full-time assignment.

Talking to Star Sports, Gautam Gambhir expressed his concerns on how Virat Kohli might shape up as a player with the pressure of captaincy released from his shoulders.

Reports: Virat Kohli refused to step down as ODI skipper, BCCI opted 'proven leader' Rohit Sharma unilaterally

“Same as Rohit Sharma’s role in red-ball cricket, it’s just that captaincy is not there. It might just free Virat Kohli up much more. He might just become more dangerous in white-ball cricket with the pressure of captaincy not being there on his shoulders,” he said.

The southpaw further added that Kohli will make India proud by scoring needful runs in the future. Rohit Sharma also spoke about the importance of Kohli as a batsman in the team.

I am sure he is going to make India proud, he is going to keep getting runs in white-ball cricket or in red-ball cricket. At the same time, there will be two different guys probably giving their own thoughts, giving their own vision to the team,” he stated.

After Rohit’s appointment as the next ODI skipper, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said that the call was made by the selectors and not by him alone. Kohli’s childhood coach said that the BCCI and the selectors lacked clarity and explanation regarding the call they took.

“It’s a call that the BCCI and the selectors took together. Actually, the BCCI had requested Virat to not step down as the T20I skipper but obviously, he did not agree. And the selectors then did not feel it right to have two different captains for two white-ball formats,” Ganguly said as quoted by ANI.
