Virat Kohli is set to play at the Wankhede Stadium on November 2 during India’s 2023 World Cup match against Sri Lanka. Kohli has been in excellent form during this year’s tournament, scoring a total of 354 runs in six matches, with a high score of 103*.

Kohli scored a century at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune during the 2023 World Cup match against Bangladesh. He will be playing another match in the same state tomorrow, and fans will hope he can achieve another three-figure score.

The Wankhede Stadium offers an excellent batting pitch, and Virat Kohli has delivered some outstanding ODI innings here. Before Kohli takes on Sri Lanka in Mumbai, let’s revisit his top three ODI performances at the Wankhede Stadium.

#1 Kohli scored 35 runs off 49 balls in his first ODI innings at Wankhede Stadium during the 2011 World Cup final

In his debut innings at the iconic Wankhede Stadium during the 2011 World Cup final, Kohli faced a pressure situation as a young member of the team. He came to the crease after openers Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar were dismissed early in a run-chase of 275.

In that 2011 World Cup final, Virat Kohli, a young right-handed batter, formed a crucial partnership with senior player Gautam Gambhir, contributing 35 runs off 49 balls with four boundaries. During their partnership of 83 runs, he effectively rotated the strike, helping to maintain the required run rate.

Unfortunately, Kohli’s innings was brought to an end when TM Dilshan took a remarkable catch off his bowling. Despite the disappointment of his dismissal, Kohli played his role effectively in the match.

#2 Kohli’s first ODI fifty at Wankhede Stadium was an undefeated 86* (99) against England in 2011

A few months after the 2011 World Cup final, there was an ODI match between India and England at the Wankhede Stadium. England scored 220 runs in their innings.

India, chasing 221 for victory, lost three wickets early. Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina then put on a partnership of 131 runs, with Raina scoring 80 and Kohli remaining unbeaten with 86 runs off 99 balls. Kohli hit 11 boundaries (fours) during his innings, contributing to India’s six-wicket victory at the Wankhede Stadium.

#3 Virat Kohli’s top ODI performance at Wankhede Stadium – scoring 121 runs from 125 balls against New Zealand in 2017

In Mumbai, Kohli has batted six times in ODIs, with three of those innings ending with him scoring less than ten runs. He managed to score one fifty and one century during these matches, with the century being against New Zealand on October 22, 2017.

Kohli, as the third-positioned batsman and captain, scored 121 runs from 125 deliveries for India, which contributed to a total of 280/8. His innings included nine fours and two sixes. Unfortunately, no other Indian batsman managed to surpass 40 runs. New Zealand successfully chased down the 281-run target with Tom Latham scoring a century, resulting in a six-wicket win for them.
