Mohammed Shami, Team India‘s new-ball seamer, has stated that he won’t rejoin the team until he’s fully fit. The right-arm seamer emphasized that he wants to be completely free of discomfort before making his return.

Shami hasn’t played since the November World Cup Final against Australia at Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. While Ajit Agarkar (the chief selector) hinted towards 34-year old’s return in upcoming home Tests versus Bangladesh and New Zealand, it may take some more time.

At CAB’s Annual Awards, Shami said that he has been away from game for a long time but wants to make his return only when he feels fully fit again. As ESPN Cricinfo quotes him:

“I am working hard to make a comeback soon because I know I have been out of action for quite some time. However, I want to ensure there is no discomfort when I return.”

“I’ve to work on my fitness, so that there is no discomfort. The stronger I return, the better it is for me. I don’t want to rush and risk getting injured again, be it against Bangladesh, New Zealand or the Australia series.”

During the 2023 World Cup, the Bengal fast bowler was in a devastating form as he took 24 wickets in seven games, thus emerging as the leading wicket-taker. Despite taking a wicket of David Warner in the finals, India lost that match by six wickets.

“If I have to play domestic cricket to assess my fitness, I will”- Mohammad Shami

The 34-year-old also mentioned that he has already started bowling and is prepared to play domestic cricket to demonstrate his fitness if needed.

“I’ve begun bowling already, but I won’t take any risks until I’m completely fit. If necessary, I’m willing to play domestic cricket to assess my fitness. What’s most important is being fully prepared for whatever comes next, no matter the opponent or format.”

India’s home season starts with a two-Test series against Bangladesh on September 19.
