Washington Sundar Credits Gambhir And Support Staff For Boosting Confidence

Indian cricketer Washington Sundar has attributed his confidence to the unwavering support of head coach Gautam Gambhir and the team’s support staff. Speaking at a post-day press conference in Melbourne, Sundar expressed gratitude for the belief they instilled in him. “Gauti Bhai [Gambhir] and the support staff kept telling me what I’m capable of at this level and format. That belief really means a lot to me and makes me feel I can achieve special things for the Indian team,” Sundar remarked. His words reflected a renewed sense of determination and optimism, emphasizing the role of team dynamics in fostering individual performances.

Contributions in a Challenging Test Match

Sundar’s half-century came at a critical juncture during the Boxing Day Test against Australia. Forming a crucial 127-run partnership with Nitish Kumar Reddy, Sundar played a key role in stabilizing India’s innings after early setbacks. Despite his dismissal by Nathan Lyon, Sundar acknowledged his solid contribution while lamenting the missed opportunity for a bigger score. “It was a good day, but it could have been better had I converted my innings into more runs. Nevertheless, we’re in a strong position,” he said. Sundar also highlighted the challenges of playing against Australia on their home turf, where the opposition continuously tests players’ resolve.

India displayed resilience, overcoming the threat of a follow-on to reach 358/9 by the end of Day 3. Nitish Kumar Reddy remained unbeaten on 105, showcasing remarkable composure with a century off 171 balls. Reddy became the third-youngest Indian to score a maiden Test hundred in Australia, following legends Sachin Tendulkar and Rishabh Pant.

India’s Position and Challenges Ahead

India’s performance on Day 3 reflected the team’s grit and determination. Reddy’s brilliant knock, supported by Sundar’s efforts, significantly reduced Australia’s lead. The partnership between Reddy and Mohammed Siraj, who remained unbeaten on 2*, ensured India entered Day 4 with momentum. Australia’s bowlers, led by Pat Cummins and Scott Boland with three wickets each, posed challenges, but India held firm.

As the match progresses, Sundar’s confidence, bolstered by Gambhir’s guidance, will remain a crucial factor in India’s quest for success in this fiercely contested series. Early stumps due to rain and bad light add further anticipation as the game resumes.
