Before the 2024 Indian Premier League, Trevor Bayliss might be replaced as the next head coach of the Punjab Kings by former cricketer Wasim Jaffer. His previous role was as a batting coach for the team. Bayliss had managed the Punjab Kings in the last two IPL seasons, finishing them eighth and ninth.

The preceding head coach was not able to optimally utilise PBKS players because of roster limitations. Bailly’s departure date is, therefore, what the Punjab Kings seek in an Indian coach in such a case.

It could have been as a result of inputs from Ashish Nehra of the Gujarat Titans, Sourav Ganguly from Delh Capitals, or Gautam Gambhir from Kolkata Knight riders, who are some of the main backers behind this decision taken by PBKS..

Wasim Jaffer and Shaun Tait are frontrunners as Punjab seeks a new coach:

With all these rumors surfacing, it seems that the Punjab Kings are considering getting Wasim Jaffer, who is an old Indian batsman, as their head coach for the IPL 2025 plans. According to an article by Indian Express, the 46-year-old may go back to being part of the Punjab Kings, especially since Trevor Bayliss has been given a two-year contract that would expire after the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League.

Jaffer served as batting coach for PBKS from 2019 to 2021 before they later employed him as a batting consultant but he resigned before the IPL 2024 auction. The only time a Preity Zinta-owned team was close to winning any trophy in the money-spinning league was in 2014, when they lost to the Kolkata Knight Riders in the finals.

A few days ago, there were speculations that PBKS was trying to hire an Indian coach for Bayliss’ position. No formal announcement has been made yet but Jaffer and the club are now in advanced talks.

For the IPL 2025 mega auction, the captain-coach of the Punjab Kings will have to rebuild their side. In 2014, the finals were reached by the Kings, but to date, in all 17 seasons, no IPL title has been won by them.
