On April 2, 2011, India won the ICC Cricket World Cup, ending a 28-year wait for the prestigious title. Former cricketer Yuvraj Singh recently reminisced about this historic achievement, calling it a victory dedicated to the Indian people and a heartfelt tribute to Sachin Tendulkar. For over two decades, Tendulkar had carried the hopes of the nation on his shoulders, and this triumph was a long-awaited realization of his dream.
The Men in Blue secured the title at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium by defeating Sri Lanka, with stellar performances from Zaheer Khan, Gautam Gambhir, and captain MS Dhoni. This momentous win mirrored India’s first World Cup victory in 1983 under Kapil Dev’s leadership, which had transformed Indian cricket forever.
Yuvraj Singh’s Emotional Reflection
Taking to Instagram, Yuvraj Singh expressed his emotions, sharing a heartfelt message about the unforgettable night.
He wrote, “April 2, 2011—the night we did it for a billion people and for one man who carried Indian cricket on his shoulders for over two decades. That World Cup wasn’t just a win. It was a thank you to a legend.”
Yuvraj emphasized how the entire team played to give Sachin Tendulkar the moment he truly deserved. Even 14 years later, the memory of that victory still gives him goosebumps, a testament to its significance in Indian cricket history.

The Road to Victory and Standout Performances
In the final against Sri Lanka, Mahela Jayawardene’s unbeaten century (113) helped set a challenging target of 274/6. Contributions from Kumar Sangakkara (48), Tillakaratne Dilshan (48), and Thisara Perera (22*) added to the total. India’s bowlers, including Zaheer Khan (2/60) and Yuvraj Singh (2/49), played crucial roles in restricting the Sri Lankan side. The Indian chase faced early setbacks with the dismissals of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar.
However, Gautam Gambhir’s composed 97, along with key knocks from Virat Kohli (35), MS Dhoni (91*), and Yuvraj Singh (21*), guided India to a six-wicket victory. Yuvraj was honored as the Player of the Tournament for his exceptional all-round performance, scoring 362 runs at an average of 90.50 and taking 15 wickets. Sachin Tendulkar, playing his final World Cup, ended as India’s highest run-getter with 482 runs, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest cricketers of all time.
