West Indies began the five-match T20I series defeating England by 4 wickets in the first T20I match played at Bridgetown, Barbados on 12th December 2023. Andre Russell returned to the playing XI after the 2021 T20 World Cup played in United Arab Emirates.
He showed his class by smashing 103 m six against Adil Rashid in the 18th over of the innings that went out of the ground. It was a superb batting effort by Russell smashing them to all parts of the ground as West Indies won the match by 4 wickets with 11 balls to spare.

Russell had an instant impact dismissing Phil Salt after the field restrictions with a stunning catch by Shimron Hetymer. He then got rid of the dangerous Liam Livingstone that halted the progress of England’s batting. Russell then produced another lovely delivery to dismiss Rehan Ahmed. Russell was brilliant with the ball picking 3 for 19 in 4 overs.
England openers Jos Buttler and Phil Salt showed intent right from the word go putting pressure on West Indies bowling. Both batters kept the momentum going for visitors before West Indies bowlers made a strong comeback picking wickets at regular intervals.
Romario Speharad went for runs but grabbed 3 for 53 in 3.3 overs. Â West Indies bowled out England for 172 in 19 overs. After the openers put on 77 runs for the opening wicket, England kept losing wickets at regular intervals and could not play the quota of overs.
Andre Russell’s all-round performanceÂ
Chasing down 172 runs to win, Kyle Mayers and Brandon King showed intent right from the word go. A stunning catch by Ben Duckett ended the innings for King. King and Mayers added 32 runs in quick time. Shai Hope and King looked impressive putting on 46 runs for the 2nd wicket.
West Indies lost 3 quick wickets of Pooran, Hetymer, Shai Hope, and Romario Speharad to be in some trouble. Andre Russell showed attacking skills along with captain Rovman Powell. Both batters ensured that West Indies chased down the target. They added an unbeaten 49 runs for the 7th wicket and won the match easily by 4 wickets.
For his match-winning performance with 3 for 19 and an unbeaten 29 off 14 deliveries, Andre Russell was named the player of the match award.
