England’s Ashes plans received a huge lift when their skipper, Ben Stokes, showed his class with a stellar display against the England Lions at Lilac Hill Park, Perth. The Lions batted first and set a pretty high target of 382 all out in 79.3 overs, with Will Jacks being the top scorer with 84 off 85 balls. Ben McKinney was the next best with 67 runs, then there was Jordan Cox with 53, and finally Thomas Rew with 55, as they all helped the innings create a good score.
But then Stokes came in as the real hero to the bowlers and pulled off a seam bowler’s masterclass that was nothing short of remarkable, showing supreme skill and control. The Lions batters were forced to submit one after another as Stokes took six wickets in total, sending home Tom Haines, Jacob Bethell, Jordan Cox, Rehan Ahmed, Will Jacks, and Tom Lawes. His final figures of 16-3-52-6 were a perfect illustration of his superb economy rate of 3.25, making it very clear that he is going to be a tough nut to crack for the Aussies in the Ashes and a great challenge for them at the same time.
Stokes is now part of an exclusive club of all-rounders in men’s Test cricket history, being one of the only three players who have scored and taken over 200 wickets besides him. He is already there along with Gary Sobers and Jacques Kallis in the league of greats he has achieved by this remarkable feat; thus, he is not only recognized as one of the very best among all-rounders of cricket but also the one displaying deadly form.
