When a paparazzo told former India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav that fans were missing him during the ongoing T20I series against England, the batter came up with a light-hearted response. The 35-year-old amusingly asked whether the photographers were really talking about him after hearing the remark.

Suryakumar succeeded Rohit Sharma as India’s T20I captain following Rohit’s retirement from the format after the 2024 T20 World Cup triumph. Under his leadership, India enjoyed a dominant run in bilateral T20Is, remaining unbeaten in every series they played.

India also lifted the 2025 Asia Cup in the T20 format before Suryakumar guided the team to a record third ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title in 2026. Despite his remarkable success as captain, Suryakumar endured a lean patch with the bat during his tenure.

He scored 932 runs after taking over the captaincy at an average of 25.88, including one century. Overall, he has amassed 3,272 runs in 113 T20Is at a strike rate of 162.94, registering four centuries and 25 half-centuries, with a highest score of 117.

However, with an eye on building a new-look side for the 2028 Olympics and the T20 World Cup later that year in Australia and New Zealand, the BCCI opted for a leadership change. Shreyas Iyer, who captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title and led Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 final, was appointed India’s new T20I captain.

Responding with his trademark humour, Suryakumar smiled and said, “Kyon, accha toh chal raha hai”(“Why? Everything is going well.”)

Despite being overlooked for selection, the 35-year-old has remained away from any controversy. Ahead of the tour, he extended his best wishes to the Indian team and has continued to support the side publicly. His recent reaction also reflected his calm approach, with the batter focusing on domestic cricket while waiting for future opportunities.
