The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) remains the most financially powerful cricket-controlling body in the world. Although India boasts a less successful record in ICC trophies over the last two decades, BCCI remains in a league of its own financially. Cricket in India has grown beyond expressions and is now a major phenomenon in the country.

The biggest and most successful venture produced by the BCCI is the Indian Premier League, which is a globally recognized T20 franchised cricket league. IPL started in 2008 and has brought dramatic change to the environment of cricket; it has attracted the best players from all around the world and given good opportunities to Indian players. The league alone has made massive strides in enriching the BCCI financially.

IPL affects the global economy of cricket in as much as it affects the Indian market alone. That followed the trend of T20 leagues across the world, with BCCI emerging as the trendsetter in international cricket. In the manner the BCCI goes on changing the complexion of world cricket, it’s the body’s financial strength and willingness to experiment that will remain a factor in Indian cricket.

How Australian cricketers Pat Cummins and others described BCCI and ICC

In an Australian media film, Pat Cummins and company were challenged to use one word each to characterize the Indian Cricket League, the BCCI, and the ICC. The Australians had positive things to say about everyone.

Pat Cummins: Big, Big, Big

Travis Head: Rulers, second, strong

Usman Khawaja: Strong, ICC, Talented

Nathan Lyon: Big, Boss, Passionate

Glenn Maxwell: Powerful, Boss, Fanatic

Alex Carey: Powerful, Trophy, Powerful

Steve Smith: Powerhouse, not as powerful (changed it to leaders)

Of course, Jay Shah, a former BCCI secretary, is now the head of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Shah became the ICC chair on December 1, 2024.
