Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar starred with the bat on day 2 as India secured a crucial first-innings lead in the fourth Test against England at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad. Speaking at the end of the day’s play, senior batsman Rohit Sharma was all praise for the duo backing their place in the playing XI.
The hosts were in all sorts of trouble losing wickets at regular intervals while the runs were hard to come by. India were at 146/6 in pursuit of England’s 205 when Washington Sundar joined Rishabh Pant in the middle. Since then, things looked assured for Virat Kohli & Co as they pounced on the loose deliveries to keep the scoreboard ticking.
Both are valuable assets to the team – Rohit Sharma to Rishabh Pant, Washington Sundar
They added 113 runs for the seventh wicket as India secured a crucial first-innings lead. In the process, Rishabh Pant unleashed his brutal power to toil with English bowlers to reach the three-figure mark while Washington Sundar looked in ominous touch piercing the gaps with ease to reach his half-century.
During a candid chat for bcci.tv, Rohit Sharma backed the young duo asserting their value to the team. The senior batsman also lauded Sundar for his bowling abilities along with hailing Pant for his wicket-keeping. Incidentally, Rishabh Pant has improved manifolds and has looked assured behind the stumps.
“You both are very important assets for the team because you guys do more than one skill. Your (Sundar) bowling is very important for the team… Rishabh, your keeping was so encouraging to watch. You seem to be working every day on your keeping which is why we see the results as well on the field. I understand it is not easy keeping on pitches like that,” Rohit said in a video shared on BCCI’s website.
