[WATCH] Gambhir And Samson’s Pre-Match Discussion Sparks Buzz Before Asia Cup 2025

Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir was spotted in a serious discussion with wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson ahead of the Asia Cup 2025 group-stage match against the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Earlier, the former cricketer was also seen having a similar conversation with another wicketkeeping contender, Jitesh Sharma, during a practice session in Dubai.

With the tournament approaching, Gambhir and the management face a crucial selection dilemma between the two keepers to finalise the playing XI. Samson’s place appears uncertain following Shubman Gill’s rise to vice-captaincy, which almost assures him a spot in the lineup, most likely as an opener.

On the other hand, Jitesh Sharma’s finishing abilities and recent consistency, showcased in the 2025 IPL with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), make him a strong option for the middle order. Amid these speculations, Sanju Samson has been actively training with the squad in the lead-up to the tournament.

During a session at the ICC Academy before India’s opener against the UAE, Gautam Gambhir was seen engaging in a one-on-one with Samson, who was in his wicketkeeping gear. The Rajasthan Royals skipper appeared attentive, nodding as Gambhir animatedly explained his points with emphatic gestures.

Sanju Samson Boasts 178.77 Strike Rate As T20I Opener

The wicketkeeper-batter enjoyed a productive spell as an opener following the 2024 T20 World Cup. He was given an extended run, particularly in bilateral series against Bangladesh, England, and South Africa, where he struck three centuries in quick succession. Earlier in his career, Samson had been tried at the top on a few occasions but was unable to leave a mark.

In total, he has amassed 522 runs from 17 T20I innings as an opener, averaging 32.63 with an impressive strike rate of 178.77. In contrast, his numbers in the middle order have been modest. Batting at No. 5 or lower, he has featured in seven matches, scoring 93 runs at an average of 18.6.
