Drama ensued in the lone women’s Test between India and Australia when Harmanpreet Kaur‘s appeal for obstructing the field against Alyssa Healy was rejected.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s timely bowling performance (2/23) played a crucial role for the Indian women’s team as they faced a significant challenge in the one-off Test against Australia on Saturday.
Despite Australia efficiently eliminating India’s 187-run lead in the first innings, Kaur made a substantial impact in the third session by dismissing Tahlia McGrath (73 runs from 177 balls, 10 fours) and the formidable Alyssa Healy (32) after a sudden burst of aggression. This limited Australia’s lead to 46 runs by the end of the third day.

The interaction between Kaur and Healy had its share of excitement. Tensions rose during the match when, just before dismissing the Australian captain, Kaur made a forceful return throw at Healy.
The throw, however, was not directly aimed at the stumps; it was high and swiftly approached Healy. In an attempt to avoid the ball, Healy deflected it towards the boundary.
Kaur appealed for obstructing the field, but the on-field umpires Anil Chaudhary and N Janani dismissed the plea. On the next delivery, Kaur managed to get Healy out leg-before as Healy attempted a sweep shot. You can watch the video here:
Harmanpreet Kaur is recognized for openly showing her emotions, and in an ODI series against Bangladesh this year, she didn’t hide her dissatisfaction with the umpiring decisions.
After getting out in one of the matches, she expressed her frustration by hitting the stumps with her bat and later criticized the umpiring as “pathetic” during the post-match presentation.
At the traditional end-of-series photo session with players from both teams, Harmanpreet allegedly exclaimed, “bring the umpires too,” suggesting they were affiliated with the Bangladesh team.
Harmanpreet was penalized with three demerit points for “displaying dissent at an umpiring decision” and an extra point for “public criticism” of match officials.
Consequently, she was absent from the initial phases of India’s Asian Games campaign, leading to Smriti Mandhana assuming the interim captaincy in Hangzhou.
Australia holds a 46-run lead with five wickets in hand as the one-off Test progresses to day 4.
